Living in Miyazaki, Suzume meets Souta, a young man searching for doors, and opens one standing alone in the ruins. It connects to the Ever-After, from which a Worm leaks out and causes earthquakes. When Suzume pulls out the keystone, Daijin is freed, and Souta is turned into a chair to take the keystone's place. Suzume chases Daijin, traveling with chair-Souta through Shikoku, Kansai, Tokyo, and Tohoku, eventually having to confront her own childhood loss of her mother in the 2011 earthquake.
