After drifting through odd jobs in Tokyo, runaway Hodaka ends up staying at writer Keisuke Suga's office. There he meets Hina, who inherited a "Sunshine Girl" power from her late mother, and the two start a business granting people's wishes for clear skies. But each use of her power makes Hina's body more transparent, until she eventually becomes part of the sky itself. Pursued by the police, Hodaka resolves to bring her back, choosing her even if it means the world's weather never returns to normal. In the film's final scene, the two reunite three years later in a Tokyo still soaked by endless rain, and take a new step forward together.
