Takumi Fujiwara, a high schooler who helps deliver tofu for his father's shop in Gunma, has spent years driving the mountain roads of Mt. Akina under his father Bunta's guidance, quietly developing extraordinary driving skills nobody knows about. One night he's pulled into a race against Keisuke Takahashi, the number-two racer of the Akagi-based team Redsuns, and crushes him in his beat-up AE86 Sprinter Trueno. Word spreads among street racers that "the tofu shop's Hachiroku is the fastest downhill on Akina," and soon Gunma's strongest drivers line up to challenge Takumi one after another. Based on Shuichi Shigeno's popular manga, this 1998 series was the first entry in what would become a long-running street-racing anime franchise.
